Social Security COLA 2027: A 3.6% Raise, With Bigger Choices Ahead

The nation's 76 million Social Security recipients will see a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to their benefits for 2027, up from 2.8% for 2026. It's the highest bump since 2023, reflecting the uptick in inflation after the start of the Iran war in February. The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that adjustment today, along with a 4.2% increase to $192,300 in the maximum salary subject to the 12.4% Social Security payroll tax. That means higher taxes for about 6% of earners, and a top tax of $23,845 per person, half paid by employers, half by employees. (The self-employed pay the full 12.4% tax on their net earnings.)
